Grow Hosts Summer Financial Wellness Series in West River

The summer is a wonderful time to brush up on your financial skills, and what better way than through engaging and informational sessions hosted by credit union professionals? Throughout June, July and August, Grow Financial hosted a free financial wellness series for residents in our West River community.

West River’s First Financial Wellness Series

Chantel Negron, AVP of Community Development, facilitated the three workshops as part of our inaugural financial literacy workshop series. Topics included financial basics, such as budgeting, managing debt and building credit.

In the third class, which focused on credit, Negron shared her own story about improving her credit through intentional choices. She advised that an important part of financial literacy is understanding one’s own habits and beliefs that shape their relationship with money:

"Finances are deeply personal. Your own spending and saving habits inform your relationship with money, and ultimately, your ability to make progress toward your financial goals."

The Hottest Topic: Credit

We regularly hear from members and our community members that topics related to credit and credit scores are important to them, and this summer was no exception. Marsha Falkenburg, VP of People Development Group, enjoyed getting to know the attendees throughout the summer financial wellness series and answering questions about a variety of important topics. She said, “One of the most popular topics was credit — credit scores, what goes into them, how you improve your credit and how to make a plan to pay off debt.”

Credit scores affect your access to credit, what interest rates you can obtain and how much you can borrow. That’s why it’s so important to maintain good credit habits. To learn more about credit, visit our credit education page.
