Business Member Highlight: Meet Miss Katie’s Sweets

When April Floyd wanted to find a way to spend more time with her three children while teaching them about responsibility and financial literacy, she came up with the perfect solution: a family-owned and operated food truck.

Miss Katie’s Sweets is a local, mobile dessert business serving the Lowcountry, from Charleston, South Carolina, to Savannah, Georgia. They specialize in delicious fair foods, including pound cake, deep fried Oreos, funnel cakes and banana pudding.

“I came up with the idea to start baking and making treats out of my home because that would give me more time with my kids and be an extra source of income while I was trying to walk away from my full-time job,” Floyd shared.

When the Floyd family moved from South Florida to Summerville, South Carolina, Floyd asked her husband for six months to grow their business.

“I’d heard great things about the Charleston food scene and wanted to explore. I met some really great food truck owners. I said, ‘I make desserts, can I tag along with you guys?’ After being told no a few times, I got some yeses! From there, Miss Katie’s Sweets took off, and in 2019, we went from a pop up to a food truck,” Floyd said.

Like us, you may be wondering, if the business owner’s name is April, who is Miss Katie?

Floyd said, “Miss Katie is actually my daughter. She’s the youngest of the clan, and she’s the one who loves sweets and desserts. Everything I make, she says, ‘Mommy, it’s so delicious!’ so I had to name it after her.”

Teaching her children about finances is important to Floyd and running a business together became the perfect learning tool.

“From the age of seven, my kids have been learning how to run a food truck business. When they do become adults, they’ll have a better understanding of how hard they have to work to earn money and how to make their money work for them. They’re coming away with a talent and skill that will propel them into the future,” Floyd shared.

When it was time to choose a financial institution for their business, Floyd found the best fit for their family at Grow.

Floyd said, “When I walked into the Grow store, there was never a question of how much money we make or how much money we’re going to bring to the institution. Instead, it was, ‘Let’s see what we can do to help you.’ Your team never made me feel like a little guy.”

If you see the Miss Katie’s Sweets truck at an event, you can find Floyd and her three children smiling while taking orders, preparing desserts and collecting payments. The future is bright for their business and Floyd is hopeful it will carry on for generations to come.

“What I’ve found in Miss Katie’s Sweets is something where I can not only have more time for my family but create something that will grow with my kids. To teach them the business and eventually leave something for them means so much to me. We love what we do,” Floyd said.

If you’re now craving yummy desserts, you can find the Miss Katie’s Sweets truck at your local Lowcountry PTO night or community event. You can learn more about the sweetest food truck rolling around Charleston here.
